Dear all,
I'm two days away from travelling to GuangZhou to take the ATPL exam and medical exams for a B777 NTR DEC position. I would like to share a few questions as follows: Regarding the medical exams I'm told that I am required to have a MRI and a MRA. Question is if the MRA is with contrast material or not? Regarding training for a NTR DEC - how long to be released from training? Word goes that one is never actually PIC. Can someone demystify this, please? What about bases in Europe. Are they actually happening? What about the cockpit environment/company towards expats?
I understand that some questions may not be answered. No worries. Thanks for the coop.
Regards, Pedro

Hi Pedro:
Sorry I can't answer the specific on the MRI or MRA - you don't have to do them if you are under 40 (I'm 38), so I didn't need to go through that process. Maybe some of the other guys can help?
The training is approximately:
3 weeks new employee induction. A very easy/boring three weeks where they try and pad your roster out with a few courses, while you wait for the administration associated with getting your residency visa. IT covers things like ETOPS/QAR - which they love/Dangerous Goods/Cargo Ops/Immigration Medical/Immigration interview/Chinese Law........ Then there is break of up to 2 weeks. Then 3 weeks technical training - CBT course. 1 week off or so. 3 weeks simulator then there is a gap of a few weeks Then line training (not sure how many flights......nobody has gone through it yet I don't believe).
You are signed off to line as a junior captain. This means you will always fly 4 crew with another captain, and you cannot let the first officers land. It also means you can't do shorthaul and don't have final authority - i.e the other guy signs the tech log. After 1 year or so (although its not official and not strictly adhered to) you can then "apply" to become full PIC. All this means is they can then roster you for shorthaul and you can give landings away. Consequently, the guys on the 787 are not even bothering - it would actually worsen their roster by doing so.
AMS is full at 15 captains, and will be opening when the 8th captain is checked to line (which is my course). AKL will be open soon. the Ozzie 33o bases are open Frankfurt......apparently it will. No idea on timeline.
Cockpit culture; I haven't done a flight yet, so can't really comment. However, all of the people I have met so far, especially the local pilots have been super friendly, and all have pretty good English. There have been no signs of racism or attitude at any of my interactions with the Chinese pilots -quite the opposite on the 777 - the fleet team seem extremely nice and very happy to have us.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Matthew

However....please understand: it's extremely disorganised. I mean......your schedule changes on a daily basis......
If you need order and structure in your life......then absolutely do not come here.
On the line its a bit different if you have an overseas base....allegedly......however the local pilots don't know what they're doing until the day before.

Any word on the YVR 787 base? Is it opening soon or at all?

Hi,
Thanks for starting this board. I am a current A320 Captain looking into the NTR contract.
I have previous FO time on B777 and B744 and wonder if I can NTR onto the B777/787?
I have a CAAC ATPL with B744 (PIC1) rating from a previous job years ago with a 744 cargo outfit which is now defunct.
Keen on either of the overseas basings such as YVR, Oz bases, or AKL. Is there a requirement for residency or just on GD is acceptable?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Chaps:
Re Vancouver base; hard to say. It's being talked about, but that's all. The first 787 base if it opens will be AKL, and AMS for the 777. But they do have guys here already that are waiting on YVR, and they're getting frustrated - as are the AKL guys.
The problem is, it's very very disorganised and all very new. They're juggling a host of competing issues, so they haven't yet decided how it's going to all look yet.
I certainly wouldn't leave a secure decent job to come here on the expectation of YVR - yet. The hiring and training process takes a long time, however guys joining now are expecting a period of time based in CAN, while waiting on the respective bases to open.
I would hope after Chinese New Year things might have more clarity.
I'm afraid it's all crystal ball stuff at the moment.

Re overseas bases and residency; it's never been mentioned at any stage as far as I'm aware. I think they just expect you to be available to work or do STBY's as required. Happy to be corrected on that.
John: regarding your question; no idea. Even the simplest issue can be made extremely complicated here, so I wouldn't like to guess. Logic doesn't always make an appearance in the decision making process.
Your situation may be decided on the opinion of the fleet management.
The best person to ask would be Craig Smith at Longreach. He's on this forum too - so he might reply. If not, I will drop him an email.

John:
I got this message from my agent:
"CSA have announced (in an email to all agents dated 27th November) they are not taking any more applications from A320 pilots, and are not screening any more guys on the A320. The screening just announced for Jan shows no slots for A320, and this is a direct cut and paste from the email:
"No any A320 sim check in 2015 any more and we are not going to accept any A320 applicant"
So he wont be able to screen in an A320 sim, or gain access from the A320 - this could of course change again down the track, but as of the 27th Nov, the door has closed for A320 guys, including everyone, from all agencies, who had previously applied and been approved to screen.
To screen, your colleague needs to be current on an aircraft type acceptable to CSA (A330/340, B737Efis/NG, B757/767, B744, or B787) and have flown as PIC within the past 12 months. These are the aircraft types that CSA are able to assess you on.
The B744 is acceptable (CSA hold 4 screenings per year for the B744, generally in March, July, September, and December), but he needs to have flown it within the past 12 months - it appears this might not be the case judging from your email.
Regarding his residency question, it is not strictly required for himself as he operates in and out on the GD (he is technically based in CAN, but has extended layovers in his RSP). If he has family, they will require visa's to stay, and the pilot needs to arrange this himself.
His best bet if he wants to get onto a widebody might be to apply to Skymark for an A330 position (they were doing upgrades a few months ago) and then apply to CSA when he has 1000 hours on the A330. There are other opportunities for NTR conversions that pop up on a regular basis, and these are normally advertised on the Longreach website."

Hi Matt,
Thank you very much for the info. Much appreciated. I shall revisit the widebody job options in China in the future.
Cheers, John

Hey guys, any word on the YVR "base" or any other North American bases? I've been invited for a screening and from reading this forum, I. Not really into it without a base in North America like advertised. Thanks guys

No news yet.
They're planning on opening AMS in the next couple of months. Once that's done, they're going to re-assess things and decide what to do.
A North American base is being talked about but just no concrete news. I wouldn't leave a decent job on the promise of a base opening.......there's just too much risk.
